In the career path as a nurse, there are many opportunities to expand and explore different roles/positions. Of those roles, a nurse could become a nurse manager/leader. There are many leadership concepts and ideas making leadership a continually growing and evolving field. Leadership in the healthcare field helps set the standard in patient care, quality, and safety. Every leader has their own unique way of setting out the mission and vision of an organization. I had the privilege to interview N.M., an assistant nurse manager of the emergency department at Baptist Hospital. As one of the eight assistant nurse managers of the emergency department, N.M. is primarily responsible for the nurses and technicians, however she also oversees the threehundredforty other employees that work in the department. The assistant nurse managers have staggered shifts, twentyfour-seven, and there is always an on call assistant manager. N.M. started her nursing career as a pediatric staff nurse for her first 7 years. She then decided to do travel nursing for 4 years in Boston, New York, and Chicago. Soon after she went on to work for Baptist Hospital as a staff nurse. Over her years as an employee of Baptist health, she was promoted as a resource nurse, charge nurse, and presently as an assistant nurse manager. N.M. has worked for Baptist Health South Florida for 16 years.
